LAY ACTION

ALTAR AND ROSARY SOCIETY

The Altar & Rosary Society is hosting its Annual Christmas luncheon on Monday, Dec. 13th at 11:30 a.m. at City Limits in Rock Island. If you would like to attend, please call Coletta at 309-786-7661. We look forward to seeing you there!

Greetings to all of our members of St. Pius X Altar & Rosary Society and future new members! We’re planning interesting programs, as well as renewing our previous friendships and creating new friendships.

As you know, all parishioners are invited to join and attend meetings. The annual dues are merely $5 and can be sent to the Rectory in care of Judi Yeager, treasurer.

The St. Pius X Altar & Rosary Society had its first meeting in September, 1955, and has been a pillar of faith and discipleship in our parish ever since. Being part of Altar and Rosary gives you the chance to be part of a community within the church, build Christ-centered friendships and, at the same time, be apostles with your time and talent.

St. Pius X Altar & Rosary welcomes all women of the parish as members. Their main mission is to provide for the adornment and maintenance of the altar, as well as to grow in the Christian life through prayer, good works and devotion to the Rosary. Additionally, the Altar & Rosary Society strives to be a means by which Catholic women can experience a supportive community of intentional disciples who help each other to grow in their relationship with Christ.

Through these faith friendships, the Altar & Rosary Society has served the parish in a many ways over the past 55 years. In addition to supporting the work of the parish through funding the purchase of liturgical vessels and supplies and maintaining the altar candles and vigil lights, the Altar & Rosary Society organizes and serves funeral luncheons, assists in various service projects and hosts social events. You are cordially invited to experience the faith and friendship offered by St. Paul the Apostle Altar & Rosary Society!

CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC PRAYER GROUP

Come and join the Servants of Christ Prayer Group! We are seeking people who wish to praise, honor and worship Jesus Christ. Deacon Paul Martin leads us in prayer and worship each Monday evening from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Narthex (main vestibule of the church). Call Deacon Paul Martin, 309-236-1715.

FAITH IN ACTION Committee
The ongoing Redistribution Box collection project, which started in January 2013, is one of the concrete ways that St. Pius parishioners put their “faith into action” by helping those in need. Thank you for your continual generosity to others during these difficult times. View the Redistribution Box Collection List. The following items are currently requested:

JustFaith in Action and the groups it supplied with yourdonations of winter items are very, very grateful for your generosity these last two months! Your response was amazing.

During February, BLUE JEANS (all sizes, new or used that are clean and in good condition) will be collected. Items may be left in either of the Redistribution Boxes located at the main church
entrances.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

All men of the parish are invited to join the Knights of Columbus. They are involved in many charitable outreaches, which they support by various fundraisers held periodically throughout the year. Their Pancake breakfasts and Coffee & Conversation events are particularly popular, helping to keep their traveling UltraSound bus moving!

LEGION OF MARY

The Legion of Mary, a world-wide organization of the lay apostolate, in which Catholic men, women and youth sanctify themselves through prayer and apostolic work in union with Our Lady was first organized in Dublin, Ireland, on September 7, 1921.

The Legion of Mary of St. Pius X parish meets each Wednesday morning in McCarthy Hall from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

ROSARY MAKERS

Rosary Makers make rosaries for the missions during the Marian months of May and October. Commit to making as few or many as you wish! Instructions and materials are provided at no charge at the beginning of each rosary drive. All of the rosaries are made at your own leisure, then collected near the end of the month to be blessed at a 10:30 a.m. Mass in late May and October. Join us! It’s very relaxing to make them and spiritually gratifying as well. Mary Ann Hanson is the coordinator of this wonderful outreach; check the bulletin where details are announced each April and September.

SOUP MAKERS

The Soup Makers kick into action during Lent, making and donating soup or mac & cheese for one (or more) of the six Lenten Soup Suppers. The soups for Ash Wednesday must be meatless.

If you are interested in contributing to this outreach, please call and leave a message for Kathy at 793-0032. Both soup makers and volunteer workers are welcome and appreciated!

ST. PIUS ANGEL TREE

The St. Pius Angel Tree tradition was started in 1983 by a devoted group of parishioners, including Marg Wadsworth, Fran Johnson, Charlie Bluer and Boyd McIntire. In the beginning, each family received food for their Christmas celebration. In 1990, the tradition expanded and parishioners began donating gifts. In 2010, a new crew of volunteers took over Angel Tree and a bag of much needed toiletries was added to the food and gifts.

2021 ANGEL TREE Project

The St. Vincent de Paul Society will prepare gift and food baskets for families in need. Names have been submitted from Head Start, WIC, Jordan and St. Pius X.

ST. JOSEPH EVENING MEAL

Now that COVID restrictions have eased in our area, the Rock Island Township is reopening, which means the Evening Meal can resume serving take-out meals. Service began Monday, Feb. 1.

A ministry of St. Pius X parish, the St. Joseph Evening Meal Program is one of the ways our parish continues to keep the spirit of St. Joseph’s Parish alive and thriving in our St. Pius community, coordinating meals for the hungry which are provided at Lund Hall (Rock Island Township Hall) on Monday through Friday at 5:30 p.m. Thousands of hungry local residents are served each year by this outreach.

Along with members & groups of our parish, other churches, organizations, government agencies and businesses organize, prepare and, if comfortable, stay to serve nightly meals. It is one of the largest Ecumenical efforts in the Quad Cities.

Our cooks’ safety, and the safety of our guests, is foremost on our minds, and many precautions are in place. Some groups bring meals “ready-to-go,” and others dish their food into to-go containers at the meal site. We have extra hands on board each night to help with serving, so cooks’ exposure to others outside of their cooking group can be minimized or eliminated. Meals are passed out of the front door of the Township Hall, and guests are required to wear a face covering to receive food. Waiting lines outside are marked to facilitate adequate distancing. On days when weather is too extreme to have the guests wait outdoors, guests line up in the dining room and hallway at the Township, again, with masks and socially distanced.

There are multiple openings in February and March for cooks. If you and your family, or a group that you are a member of, can provide a meal or would like to cook, please contact Rita Kirk at 309-786-3799.

The St. Joseph Day Celebration, an annual parish fundraiser to benefit the Evening Meal program, is held each spring and is the only means of support for this important ministry. Included in the Sunday evening event are:

  • 4:00 Gathering & Silent Auction begins

  • 5:00 Evening Prayer & Blessing

  • 5:15 Dinner

  • 6:00 Live Auction begins
